**Bhubaneswar: ** In a bid to make police stations people-friendly and prompt in redressal of public grievance, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today launched 35 Model Police Stations one in each district through video conferencing from Secretariat here and prior to that inaugurated Airport Model Police Station here in the capital city.
The Airport Model PS has been envisaged as sequel to opening of International Airport here and keeping in mind the issues related to increased flow of foreign tourists.
The Chief Minister also flagged off 12 PCR mobiles meant for increased police mobility and patrolling in Bhubaneswar for the ensuing World Cup Hockey and thereafter for prompt and better response to the people in need.
He also flagged off 35 new Boleros and 70 new motorcycles meant for 35 Model Police Stations. These are additional vehicles provided to the Model Police Stations to improve mobility and efficiency.
While inaugurating the 35 Model Police Station through video conferencing, the Chief Minister also interacted with the people present in 7 Model Police Stations – Similiguda of Koraput district, Bada Bazaar PS of Berhampur, Nalco PS of Angul, Puri Town PS of Puri, Sahadevkhunta PS of Balasore, Khetarajpur PS of Sambalpur and Plantsite PS of Roukela district police.
During such interaction, people overwhelmingly expressed their happiness and gratitude to the Chief Minister for having introduced the concept of Model Police Station which will be people-friendly and prompt in redressal of public grievance.
The Chief Minister expressed his happiness while launching Model Police Station and told, “This will inspire confidence among public and shall go a long way in making police not only smart but also people friendly.”
Attending the launching ceremony, Odisha Development Commissioner R BalakrIshnan expressed his happiness on performance Odisha Police in maintenance of law and order, crime control, disaster response and combating left wing extremists, and also complimented the new idea of Model Police Station and expressed his hope saying, “Now common people will feel confident in visiting the Police Stations, shall be treated friendly and their complaints will be attended to as early as possible.”
In his welcome address, Odisha DGP Dr R.P. Sharma mentioned that the workload and challenges of police are increasing everyday along with rising expectation of enlightened public. Police has to keep pace with above challenges in terms of logistics, infrastructure, skilled and adequately trained manpower with scientific and modern gadgets.
He emphasized, “Police should not only be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound), but also should be people friendly in a welfare state. They should be sensitive and treat people with empathy particularly vulnerable and weaker sections of the society.”
He further added that the concept of Model Police Station entails both physical aspect as well as functional parameters to achieve these ends.
The Model Police Stations will act as role-model for the other police stations in the district. He requested for necessary financial and material support to extend the concept to other 537 territorial Police Stations of the State and requested Government to extend necessary financial and logistic support.
He mentioned that idea of Model Police Station is comprehensive and first of its kind in entire country.
On the occasion of inauguration, the meeting there ended with vote of thanks by Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissioner of Police Satyailt Mohanty.
Briefing media soon after the launching of the Model Police Stations, Asheet Kumar Panigrahi, IGP (Hdqrs.), Odisha Police said, “Hon’ble Chief Minister today launched today 35 Model Police Stations for each district of Odisha through video conferencing. Model Police Station is not a new police station. 32 physical parameters have been included in the existing police station, its surrounding, its layout, facilities for various categories of citizens like women, children, senior citizens, differently-abled, etc. Besides, our functional parameters will improve in quality for being people friendly.”
“The State Government has extended full cooperation to this venture. It is the brain child of the DGP Sir. Depending on its success, the idea will be tried to extend to our other 537 territorial Police Stations of Odisha,” he informed.
