Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the demise of former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Monday.
One of India’s most eminent and oldest Communist leaders, Achuthanandan passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at 3:20 p.m. He was 101 years old. The veteran leader had been undergoing treatment following a cardiac arrest nearly a month ago.
Taking to social media platform X, CM Majhi conveyed his condolences, saying, “Saddened to hear about the demise of former Kerala CM V.S. Achuthanandan. Heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. May Mahaprabhu Jagannath grant him eternal peace. Om Shanti.”

Fondly known as “VS” among comrades and opponents alike, Achuthanandan was the last surviving founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), established in 1964 after a split from the original Communist Party of India (CPI). His exit from CPI, along with a group of comrades, marked a historic ideological shift in Indian left politics.
He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
Following the announcement of his death, CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan briefed the media on the funeral arrangements.
