Bhubaneswar: The mascot for Krushi Odisha 2019 was unveiled by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here on Friday.

The State Government has selected 'Sweet Potato' as the mascot for the event as it is culturally and religiously important for people of Odisha and it is used in Mahaprasad at Lord Jagannath temple in Puri.

Odisha occupies first place in the country both in Sweet Potato production and consumption. Total annual average production of Sweet Potato in Odisha is 4 lakh tonnes in 42,000 hectares.

It is worthwhile to mention that the State Government and International Potato Center (CIP) have joined hands to boost farmers’ income and nutrition through Generating Advances in Incomes and Nutrition through Sweet Potato (GAINS) project in Odisha.

Further, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Bhubaneswar has also taken steps for establishment of processing unit of Sweet Potato.

Sweet Potato is considered as a disaster relief crop because it is handy and withstands well during cyclone and drought conditions. It is rich in carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and essential micronutrients. Orange fleshed Sweet potato, rich in Vitamin A, is gaining importance in Odisha.
