Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has collected over Rs 1,234 crore as revenue from tobacco and pan masala products in 2024-25, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Monday.
Replying to a question raised by MLA Tankadhar Tripathy, Majhi stated that Value Added Tax and other applicable taxes are being levied on pan masala, gutkha, cigarette, beedi and other tobacco products sold in the state. Year-wise revenue collection details for the last ten years were tabled in the House.
According to the data, the state collected ₹264.51 crore in 2016-17. In 2017-18, the collection stood at ₹71.49 crore up to June 2017 and ₹309.53 crore from July 2017 to March 2018. The revenue rose to ₹480.71 crore in 2018-19, ₹609.90 crore in 2019-20, ₹711.23 crore in 2020-21, ₹876.63 crore in 2021-22 and ₹889.42 crore in 2022-23. The collection further increased to ₹1,012.56 crore in 2023-24 and touched a high of ₹1,234.88 crore in 2024-25. In the current financial year 2025-26, the state has so far collected ₹885.45 crore from these products.
The figures indicate a steady rise in revenue from tobacco and pan masala products over the years, with the highest collection recorded in 2024-25.
