Bhubaneswar: In a bid to check crime against women and gender-specific offences at workplaces, the Commissionerate of Police has decided to appoint working women as Special Police Officers. The SPOs will be selected from among women working at multinational companies, including BPOs, software firms, banks and even educational institutions.
Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi said this step has been taken to ensure better communication between the police and the women and workplaces and higher educational institutions.
“At times, women hesitate to approach the police and report matters related to harassment and related offences either at the workplace or while commuting to work. The SPOs will act as an interface between police and the working women (of the organisation),” he said.
In urban areas, women and young girls often face issues while commuting to work. Very often these problems are ignored or concealed by the victims.
“The SPOs will remain in touch with their colleagues and relay their problems to us. With this we will be in a better position to understand specific issues faced by urban women and strengthen security measures for them,” Sarangi added.
