Puri: National Health Mission (NHM) Director Shalini Pandit along with her staff and the Chief District Medical Officer were stuck in the latter’s office building here on Wednesday as protests by contractual workers escalated.
The incident took place when around 50 contractual workers employed at the Puri District Headquarters (DHH) Hospital resorted to an agitation demanding permanent jobs and clearance of pending salary.
The protestors demanded to discuss the matter with the NHM Director and sought an early resolution of their grievances. Pandit, who was on an official visit to the DHH was locked up for around two hours.
The police intervened and convinced the protestors for a face-to-face discussion with the CDMO following which the protest was withdrawn and Pandit and her staff came out of the building.
According to reports, some of these contractual workers have not got their salary for more than eight months. Besides, they also demanded permanent jobs, having worked at the DHH for a long time.
Puri CDMO, Dr Nilakantha Mishra said that the stoppage of users fee has led to the discontinuation of salaries of contractual workers. “The matter has been put up before the Rogi Kalyan Samiti (RKS) and steps have been taken to address their concerns. We are confident the matter will be resolved soon.”
