Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s state-run drug de-addiction centres admitted 3,431 persons seeking treatment for substance abuse during the 2024–25 financial year. Of these, 2,083 patients successfully completed rehabilitation and were released, the Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Department said.
According to Sonia Behera, Additional Secretary of the department, the state currently runs 11 government de-addiction centres, each with a capacity of 30 patients. In addition, 41 Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs), managed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), can accommodate 15 individuals each.
“These centres provide professional support, including access to clinical psychologists, and are part of the state’s wider strategy to combat substance abuse and support rehabilitation,” Behera said.
She added that the state is also taking steps to strengthen the capacity of medical professionals in addiction psychiatry through specialised training programmes.
