**Cuttack: ** Gracing the special function for felicitating the Investigating Officers (IOs) and Public Prosecutors (PPs) those who have achieved conviction in heinous crime during court trial, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Rajendra Prasad Sharma today set target for at least crossing 20% conviction rate in heinous crime in 2019.
The special felicitation function was organized by Odisha Crime Branch at its State Headquarters here today in which 44 IOs and PPs of the concerned districts were felicitated.
Prominent among others, Crime Branch ADG Santosh Kumar Upadhyay and IG CID, CB Arun Bothra also were present.
Briefing media, the DGP said, “Today Crime Branch has organized this function for felicitating the Investigating Officers (IOs) and Public Prosecutors (PPs) those who have achieved conviction in heinous crime during court trial. 44 Investigating Officers and the Prosecutors of the concerned districts were felicitated today here.”
He also informed, “In addition to this, the exercise of cannabis cultivation destruction is now underway. The concerned police officers for best performance in it have also been felicitated. Especially in Kandhamal district, cannabis has been destroyed in large scale. Our intention is to keep the right motivation level of the IOs and this felicitation will also inspire others.”
“We know that the conviction rate in Odisha is very low. 10-14% conviction rate has been recorded since the past. It is very less than the national average. We are now seriously trying to have investigation, prosecution and deposition of witnesses in proper and timely manner. Also by using the scientific investigation method, we are now seriously trying so that our conviction rate could be increased,” he stated.
He also stated, “Now the conviction rate of the red flag cases or the heinous crimes has begun to increase. Our specialized investigation wing EOW has its conviction rate is already very high, above 90%. I hope we could improve a bit the quality of investigation and if the witnesses during their depositions are well-aware and do not turn hostile in the court of law and also the emphasis we are putting on the physical evidence, this will definitely help Odisha Police in achieving its conviction rate near to the national average.”
“We are moving ahead with a modest target that we have to cross our conviction rate 20% in 2019, it will be a good achievement. At least we start marching on the correct road so that our objective of increasing the conviction rate is achieved,” he stressed.
