Odisha Doc Breaks Superstitions, Convinces Pregnant Woman For Hospital

Malkangiri: Going above and beyond the duty, Malkangiri district Mathili block doctor broke the shackles of superstition and was able to successfully convince a pregnant woman for hospital for her delivery.

Radha Peda (23) hails from Mao-infested Baliguda village under Mathili and is in her ninth month of gestation. Deep-rooted in superstition, she put her faith on local quacks instead of science and vehemently refused to go to hospital for her delivery. After even ASHA workers failed to convince Radha, Dr Amaya Kumar Swain decided to come down from Mathili in an attempt to convince her.

Dr Amaya said, “The lady’s delivery date was more than a week ago and in an attempt to fight the mortality rate, I decided to personally go down.”

Without backing down, Dr Amaya was able to break the shackles of superstition that Radha was tied to and got her admitted at Mathili hospital. He personally oversaw her safe transportation and admission to the hospital. “I hope my initiative will inspire others to trust medical science rather than dumb superstitions,” said diligent doctor.

Dr Amaya’s selfless effort has garnered him not only respect but also will go a long way in improving the health care situation in the district.
