**Khurda:** A case has been lodged against former Khurda MLA, Jyotirindra Nath Mitra aka Jitu Mitra at the Town police station after a complaint filed by his daughter-in-law regarding repeated torture and dowry harassment.
In the FIR, the woman mentions that she was subjected to torture and assault by Mitra, his wife and their daughter. She had married into the household last year following which her husband had left for Bahrain for work. Back here, she was repeatedly tortured and humiliated by them.
She has also alleged that her husband supported his family members in their actions and did not pay any heed to her complaints. Later last year, she went to Bahrain to stay with her husband where she got conceived. However, she had to come back to Odisha for taking an exam and during that time she was subjected to assault by Mitra’s family again.
She then goes on to explain how her husband and in-laws claimed that the baby in her womb was not theirs and allegedly thrashed her. They made her work hard and also did not let her take medicines on time.
The woman then alleges in the FIR that the Mitra family started demanding dowry from her after she shifted back to her parents’ house in Bhadrak. When their demands were not met, the Mitra family assaulted her entire family. Her husband also did not support her during the delivery, she alleges.
Khurda SP Dipti Ranjan Ray said that Mitra’s daughter-in-law came to the police station with her baby on September 15 and lodged an FIR against the family members. As per her statement, a case has been registered under section 498 of IPC.
Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
