Odisha Excise Officer Caught Red-Handed By Vigilance While Taking Bribe In Puri

**Puri:** Vigilance sleuths of Puri unit arrested a State Excise officer today morning for taking bribe in Sadar area here.

The arrested accused has been identified as Surya Narayan Ratha who is an Excise sub-inspector.

Ratha was caught while he was taking a bribe of Rs 8,500 from one Prasanna Palei, an alcohol vendor, in front of Sadar Police Station here.

Vigilance DSP Hara Narayan Pati explained, “Ratha had figured out that Prasanna was running an illegal business. So every month he was collecting a bribe of Rs 8,500 from Prasanna to keep his mouth shut from complaining about the illegal business.”

“Once, Prasanna had refused to pay him money and Ratha had filed a complaint against him. Since then, Prasanna had been terrified and was duly forking out the bribe every month,” Pati added.

Soon after Ratha was caught taking a bribe, a vigilance case was registered against him.

The sleuths also raided his house and he will be forwarded to the court soon, Pati concluded.
