Odisha’s Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the introduction of 100 new electric buses, bringing the total number of electric buses to 280. These buses will operate on existing routes and eight new routes, increasing frequency and improving network coverage across Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri.
The new electric buses will be housed at the state-of-the-art Naraj Electric Bus Depot, spread across 8.01 acres, built at a cost of Rs 50.16 crore. This green depot features charging stations, maintenance bays, bus-washing facilities, and dedicated parking areas, making it one of the most advanced electric bus depots.
With an operational budget of approximately Rs 500 crore for 10 years, these buses will significantly contribute to Odisha’s goal of achieving sustainable urban mobility. CRUT currently operates a robust fleet of 560 buses, including 180 electric buses, with an average daily ridership of over three lakhs.
The expansion of electric buses is part of Odisha’s commitment to eco-friendly and efficient public transportation. The state government plans to introduce more electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, with 400 additional e-buses expected to be deployed soon. This initiative aims to promote green mobility and reduce carbon emissions in the region
