Bhubaneswar: The next 48 hours are crucial as the peak flood of around 10 lakh to 12 lakh cusecs flood will pass through during this period in the Mahanadi system, informed Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena today.
“The next 48 hours are crucial when the peak flood of 10 to 12 lakh cusecs will pass through and recede. We have to remain very vigilant during this period,” said Jena addressing a presser.
Jena said that the embankment has to be guarded and monitored during this period by involving the the engineers of Water Resources Department, elected peoples representatives of the three-tier Panchayati Raj system, urban local bodies, MLAs, MPs and the general public.
“We have to guard the embankment by involving more and more people because we will be handling the season’s first flood with a quantum of 11-12 lakh cusecs. The season’s first flood is always critical since there is more possibility of seepage through holes created in the embankment by rodents or jackals which often remain unnoticed. So the season’s first flood is always critical,” the SRC explained.
So with cooperation from all we will strengthen patrolling of embankments for the 48-72 hours, he added.
