Cuttack: A former police official’s son was arrested on Monday for driving under alcoholic influence and causing an accident which resulted in six people receiving grievous injuries, said Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akhileshvar Singh.
The accident occurred near Matamatha of Cuttack city at about 11 pm last night. The drunk driver’s car smashed into an auto and critically injured six, including four of a family.
The horrific accident shocked the onlookers, but, breaking from stance they rushed the injured to the nearest hospital. They also held onto the drunk driver and handed him over to the police after they arrived. Locals also allege that the youth was with his lady friend inside the car who managed to escape after the accident.
The youth, Ankit Parida, belongs to Kalyani Nagar area of the silver city. He was confirmed to be the son of a retired police official, said Cuttack DCP.
Speaking about the accident, DCP Singh said, “It has been confirmed that the youth was driving under alcoholic influence. He has been forwarded to court. Meanwhile, the six injured are said to be out of danger.”
DUI, or driving under the influence in India is a criminal offence under the Motor Vehicle Act 1988. Section 185 of the Act states that any person who is found to have alcohol exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood in their system is breaking the law.
