**Nayagarh:** In an encounter with police, dreaded criminal Chagala was gunned down by district police at Nabaghanpur village under Sadar police limits here on Thursday late night.
As per police sources, Chagala was planning a crime along with his associates who managed to flee from the spot during the police encounter. When the criminals saw police they stared firing at the cops. In retaliation, the cops too fired back in which Chagala was injured.
Chagala received bullet injuries on both his legs and was rushed to the Nayagarh DHH initially, later he was shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where he succumbed to his bullet injuries.
According to sources, Chagala was a close aide of gangster Tito and more than 50 cases of murder, extortion and bombing are pending against him at different police stations across the state. A country made pistol and two bullets were seized from the spot.
Earlier, gangster Tito had sustained bullet injuries on his left leg in a police encounter near Chandikhole on June 30.
