Odisha: Golden Mask By Cuttack’s Very Own Golden Man

Cuttack: Silver City Cuttack’s very own golden man Alok Mohanty has stunned onlookers yet again with his penchant for the yellow metal. While, Alok is known for donning several hundred grams of gold ornaments in one go, this time it is his face mask made of pure 22 carat gold which has become talk of the town.

Mohanty, the proprietor of ‘Alok Furniture’ has an affinity towards gold since his childhood. The attraction for gold is so intense that other than the ornaments his accessory like watch and cap are also made of or lined with gold.

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when face masks have become compulsory, rather indispensable to save lives, Mohanty decided to make a mask of gold. For this he placed a special order with a local goldsmith of Baniya Sahi.

However, this mask involved a lot of minute work, the local jeweller decided to send it to Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, a place renowned for jewellery designing. It took a good three weeks to prepare the mask, said Mohanty. The final product has 100 grams of gold lined and sewed on its body which is a basic N-95 mask available at a regular chemist shop.

“Masks are compulsory today. These piece of stuff can save lives and check the spread of COVID-19 significantly. We all should wear masks, maintain social distance and move out of homes only when it is very necessary,” Mohanty said.

Mohanty is also known for his social work and love for stray animals. “On a daily basis I serve curd milk to passersby and during this COVID-19 crisis I helped the needy with basic grocery items,” he added. The Golden Man of Cuttack also feeds a dozen stray cattle on a daily basis in the city.
