Bhubaneswar: The State government, in collaboration with urban development authorities and environmental experts, announced the conceptualization of the Mahanadi Waterfront project.

This transformative initiative is set to redefine the Mahanadi Riverfront, turning it into a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive space that merges ecological conservation with urban development. The project will enhance the quality of life for locals, promote tourism, and preserve the river’s rich cultural, historical, and environmental heritage.

A high-level meeting was held today at Kharabela Bhawan, chaired by Minister of Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra. The meeting was attended by several dignitaries, including Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahatab, MLAs Sofia Firdous (Cuttack-Barabati), Souvik Biswal (Cuttack-Choudwar), and Prakas Chandra Sethy (Cuttack Sadar). Other prominent attendees included CMC Mayor Subhas Singh, Principal Secretary of H&UD Usha Padhee, Cuttack Collector, CMC Commissioner, and senior officials from the Water Resources Department, Forest, and Climate Change departments.

They also advised starting the work immediately as per the DPR and at least the Bali Yatra ground may be ready accordingly before the coming fair.

The Mahanadi Waterfront development is envisioned as a world-class urban and recreational space that caters to the needs of the local community, promotes ecological sustainability, preserves cultural heritage, and fosters economic growth. It will integrate green infrastructure, cultural preservation, and modern urban planning to create a dynamic blend of leisure, commerce, tourism, and environmental awareness.

Prioritizing the health of the Mahanadi River, the project will focus on water quality management, waste treatment plants, and protecting aquatic biodiversity. It will include river clean-up initiatives, waste management systems, and efforts to encourage sustainable practices among local communities.

The waterfront will feature mixed-use spaces, including residential units, commercial zones, recreational facilities, and public amenities. The development will focus on green spaces, pedestrian-friendly walkways, cycling paths, and well-connected transportation systems. Smart technology will be integrated for efficient waste management, water monitoring, and ensuring public safety.

As a premier eco-tourism destination, the Mahanadi Waterfront will offer water sports like boating, kayaking, and river cruises. Event spaces will host music and food festivals, local cultural performances, and more, attracting both national and international tourists.

The project will create accessible parks, playgrounds, and recreational zones for seniors, children, and differently-abled individuals. It will also encourage local artisans, farmers, and small businesses to set up markets and kiosks, promoting indigenous craftsmanship and products.

To mitigate the risk of seasonal flooding, the waterfront will incorporate flood protection infrastructure, such as embankments, elevated walkways, and flood barriers. Green infrastructure solutions, including rainwater harvesting and permeable surfaces, will be integrated to enhance climate resilience.

The Mahanadi Waterfront project will generate significant employment opportunities during both construction and operation phases. Local businesses, hospitality industries, and service providers will benefit from increased footfall and commercial activity.

The Mahanadi Waterfront project promises to be a game-changer, balancing development with environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and economic growth. As a premier destination for recreation, tourism, and urban living, the waterfront will enhance the lives of those living along the Mahanadi River and offer a world-class experience for visitors from around the world
