Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has asked authorities of state-run universities and colleges to identify non-performing teachers for compulsory premature retirement and submit compliance reports by January 31.
In a letter issued on January 13 to registrars of universities as well as principals of degree colleges and higher secondary schools, the Higher Education Department directed institutional heads to review the efficiency and conduct of teaching staff under their administrative control. The move is part of the state government’s broader effort to take action against inefficient and corrupt employees and to strengthen academic and administrative standards in higher education institutions.
The department has instructed authorities to examine service records, performance appraisal reports, integrity status and overall conduct of teachers while identifying cases that may warrant consideration for compulsory premature retirement. The letter underlined that such action must strictly adhere to relevant service rules and existing government guidelines.
Stating that the exercise is being undertaken in the interest of maintaining academic standards and administrative efficiency, the department emphasised that any proposal for premature retirement must be well-reasoned, supported by documentary evidence and duly vetted at the appropriate level. It also stressed the need to follow the principles of natural justice while initiating such action.
The Higher Education Department has asked all concerned authorities to treat the matter as urgent and submit their compliance reports to the government by January 31 for further examination at the state level.
