Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has enforced a two-month ban on fishing along its coastline, effective from today. This annual ban aims to protect marine life during their breeding and mating season, ensuring the conservation of fish stocks and the sustainability of the fishing industry.
As per reports, the Odisha Fisheries Department has issued directives to the fisheries officers in Ganjam, Kujang, Balasore, and Puri emphasizing strict adherence to the Orissa Marine Fishing Regulation Act. Those found violating the act may face imprisonment and fines.
It is pertinent to mention that the Act regulates fishing activities along the state’s coastline to conserve marine life and ensure sustainable fishing practices.
The ban will be strictly enforced through a multi-layered patrolling exercise involving forest, fisheries, and marine police, as well as coast guard personnel.
According to sources, traditional boats measuring 8.5 meters in length are exempted from the ban. Approximately 5,000 fishermen employed in around 700 trawlers in Paradip will be impacted by the ban.
The ban may affect the livelihood of fishermen and their families, although the government has provided assistance in the past to mitigate losses.
