Odisha Govt Inks MoU With NABARD For Renovation Of 10,000 Ponds In 15 Dists

**Bhubaneswar: ** Odisha Government’s Water Resources Department today signed a subsidiary agreement National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on Green Climate Fund in the presence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here. The agreement has been signed for implementation of water conservation projects in 15 districts of the State.

While Rs 1115 crore will be spent in 5 years, 10,000 ponds will be revived in the process.

The signing of subsidiary agreement is meant for ground water recharge and solar micro-irrigation to ensure food security and enhance resilience in vulnerability tribal areas of Odisha.

As per a press brief, “Climate Change is predicated to have profound adverse impact on State’s water resources. To address adverse impact of climate change in water sector, State Government has submitted a proposal to Green Climate Fund (GCF), an international institution for funding. The proposal aims to augment the ground water resources by way of renovation of 10,000 existing ponds and installation of recharge structures. The ground water stored will be utilized later for irrigation in order to ensure food security. This includes installation of solar based pump for micro irrigation in 1000 ponds.”

It added, “The proposal submitted by State Government is India’s first project funded by GCF. The project will be implemented in 15 districts of the State namely Bargarh, Bolangir, Boudh, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Sambalpur and Sonepur.”

Also stated, “The total cost of the project is 166.30 million US dollar (Rs 1150 crore approximately) out of which GCF will provide grant of 34.357 US dollar (Rs 232 crore approximately) through NABARD. The project will be completed within a period of five years.”
