Bhubaneswar: In a proactive move to promote and preserve the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of Odisha, Housing & Urban Development Department Principal Secretary Usha Padhee has issued a directive mandating the use of the Odia script on signboards of all shops and commercial establishments under the jurisdiction of Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Notified Area Councils.
As per the new order, the Odia script must cover at least 60% of the total signboard area, reinforcing the prominence of the state’s official language in public spaces.
This initiative reflects the State Government’s ongoing commitment to making public signage more accessible, especially for citizens unfamiliar with other languages or scripts.
To encourage compliance, establishments that adhere to the mandate will be eligible for a 5% discount on their trade license renewal fees. This benefit can be availed through the SUJOG and Bhubaneswar.me online portals.
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been directed to verify adherence during trade license renewals and inspections, with the deadline set for September 30, 2025. Non-compliant shops will receive formal notices and be given 55 days to update their signage. Failure to comply within this grace period will result in a penalty of Rs 500 per day.
Additionally, Municipal Corporations, Municipalities, and Notified Area Councils will conduct awareness drives to inform shopkeepers about the new regulations and offer necessary support to facilitate compliance.
All ULBs are also tasked with submitting comprehensive compliance reports within 60 days to the Office of the Director, Municipal Administration.
Stakeholders seeking clarification or assistance can contact the Directorate of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development Department.
