Bhubaneswar: In a major decision taken in the Odisha Assembly on Sunday, schools in scheduled areas with minimum students’ strength of 15 were excluded from the list of the schools which are to be shut down from the next academic session.
School & Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash said that earlier 7,772 schools were to be shut down based on students’ strength of below 20 to below 40 across Odisha.
However, as the Assembly today decided that the minimum number of students’ strength of schools in scheduled areas should be 15, the actual number of schools to be shut down is yet to be finalised.
“The merger of schools with students’ strength below 20 in non-scheduled areas and below 15 in scheduled areas will continue. Natural barriers will be taken into consideration and even if the legislators have any grievances, they can put it forth to the concerned Collectors or directly to the Minister,” he added.
The Minister said that it is not the intention of the government to close any school arbitrarily. The merger of small schools with others will create a good academic environment and lead to quality education, he added.
