Odisha Govt Plans Ban On Liquor, Non-Veg Sales Near Puri Jagannath Temple

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government is preparing to enforce stricter regulations around the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, aimed at preserving the sanctity of the revered shrine.

Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Tuesday said that all liquor outlets operating within a one-kilometre radius of the temple will soon be shut down. “Once the policy framework is finalised, the decision will be implemented without compromise,” he stated.

Along with the liquor ban, the government also plans to prohibit the sale of non-vegetarian food items along the iconic Badadanda (Grand Road) and its adjoining lanes, which serve as the main approach to the 12th-century temple.

The move, officials said, is part of broader efforts to ensure that the spiritual and cultural environment of the temple town remains undisturbed, particularly in the areas most frequented by devotees and pilgrims.
