Bhubaneswar: Unscrupulous jewellers in Odisha have been detected to be duping consumers of their hard-earned money by adopting unfair means.
The matter came to light after Consumer Welfare Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain read out a list of jewellers who have been penalized during raids for duping consumers by adopting unfair means.
The Minister read out the list during Question Hour in the State Assembly today.
According to the Minister’s statement penalties have been imposed on 8 jewellery shops in Cuttack, 4 in Balasore, 5 in Khurda, 7 in Deogarh and 4 in Sundargarh for cheating consumers by adopting unfair means in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The Minister stated that in the aforementioned two years, 859 number of cases were detected, 856 cases were compounded and Rs 17,12,800 was realized as compounding fees.
The statement of the Minister has revealed that while the minimum penalty realized was Rs 500, the maximum penalty realized was Rs 2,000.
According to the Minister’s statement a total of 42 jewellery shops were raided and penalties realized in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
After listening to the Minister’s statement in the House, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro wondered that when the majority of jewellery shops were located in Bhubaneswar and Berhampur none have found a place in the Minister’s list.
The Speaker directed the Minister to conduct inspections and raids in jewellery shops at Bhubaneswar and Berhampur.
