Bhubaneswar: In response to a recent Supreme Court judgment, the Odisha government announced its immediate implementation of the ruling that unequivocally declares watching and downloading child pornography a criminal offence.
This landmark decision delivers a strong message against child sexual exploitation, reinforcing the responsibility of every citizen to safeguard children’s safety and well-being.
The Women & Child Development (W&CD) Department, in an official statement, emphasized that ignorance of the law will no longer protect those involved in exploiting or endangering minors.
Under the ruling, any form of engagement with child pornography—whether viewing or downloading—will be met with full prosecution. The State reiterated its commitment to enforcing stringent legal measures to eradicate child sexual exploitation in all forms.
To strengthen efforts, the State plans to enhance coordination with law enforcement agencies, forming specialized task forces to investigate and prosecute the dissemination and consumption of child pornography.
In addition, the government will follow the Supreme Court’s recommendations by investing in comprehensive support services for child abuse victims, ensuring they receive the necessary care and resources for recovery.
The State’s zero-tolerance policy toward child sexual exploitation encourages citizens to report any suspicious activity to protect vulnerable children in their communities.
