Bhubaneswar: As temperatures continue to rise across Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a further spike of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
With Jharsuguda already recording a blistering 45.4°C on Monday, officials expect the mercury to touch 46°C in parts of western Odisha, triggering severe heatwave conditions and prompting public health concerns.
According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are likely to intensify, particularly in the districts of Jharsuguda, Balangir, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur on Tuesday. One or two locations in these areas may experience extreme heat, with the situation expected to persist until April 25.
On Monday, 13 locations across the state witnessed temperatures exceeding 40°C, signaling the early arrival of peak summer heat. The Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre noted that this trend is likely to continue due to prevailing dry westerly and northwesterly winds over the region.
Despite marginally lower daytime temperatures along the coast, coastal districts are also reeling under uncomfortable weather conditions. IMD attributed this to high humidity levels, which are contributing to heatwave-like discomfort even in areas where the thermometer has not crossed critical thresholds.
Meanwhile, the impact on public health is already evident. The state government has confirmed 49 cases of heat-related illnesses, with several individuals requiring hospitalization.
In view of the rising mercury, the IMD has advised residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, typically between 12 pm and 4 pm. Citizens venturing out have been urged to stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothing, and cover their heads to minimize heat exposure.
