Bhubaneswar: Odisha has identified 45 potential sites for Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs), which play a crucial role in renewable energy storage and management.
Out of these, 10 projects are set to be implemented by various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) at the government level. Additionally, several private companies have independently identified sites for PSPs, and the development rights for these projects will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Farmer Empowerment, and Energy, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, during a high-level meeting held today.
The meeting also reviewed the progress of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Odisha Government and Telangana’s Sangamam Power Project Company during the recent Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. The agreement focuses on establishing a Pumped Storage Project in the state.
Inspired by the Indian Prime Minister’s emphasis on clean fuel and green energy, Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo reiterated Odisha’s commitment to the production and utilization of green energy. “Odisha is fully aligned with the national vision of promoting renewable energy and sustainable development,” he said.
Sangamam Power Project Company has already prepared a detailed project report for setting up a 1000 MW PSP at Sunki in Koraput district. The project, which will utilize reverse turbine technology, is designed to generate electricity for six hours daily during peak demand periods.
The company has requested the Odisha Government to provide single-window clearance and other incentives to expedite the project’s implementation.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary of Industries Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Energy Department Vishal Kumar Dev, Managing Director of IDCO Bhupendra Singh Poonia, and Sangamam Power representatives Deepak Mathur and Bhaskar Rao.
With these initiatives, Odisha is poised to become a significant contributor to India’s renewable energy landscape, ensuring a sustainable and greener future.
