Bhubaneswar: In a recent statement, Minister of ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Nityananda Gond revealed that there are currently 5,284 beggars in the state. The government is actively working towards making Odisha beggar-free through various initiatives.
In response to a written query by MLA Laxman Bag during the Assembly Session, Gond stated that Cuttack has the highest number of beggars at 1,060, followed by Bargarh with 595, Ganjam with 545, Balangir with 482, Sundargarh with 417, and Puri with 350.
On the second day of the Budget Session in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Gond revealed that the state government aims to make Odisha beggar-free through various initiatives which provide socio-economic support to beggars. To achieve its goal, the state government has launched special drives, including ‘Niladri Nilaya’ in Puri and ‘Ekamra Nilaya’ in Bhubaneswar.
