Odisha Inks Rs 16,554 Crore Port Deals To Boost Maritime Trade And Economy

Bhubaneswar: The State Government is prioritizing the development of maritime commerce in Odisha by establishing ports, jetties, and other infrastructure at various locations across the state. This was stated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on the occasion of signing a Concession Agreement for the development of Gopalpur port and construction of a captive jetty at Jatadhara mouth.

The State Government has signed a concession agreement with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the construction of a captive jetty at Jatadhara mouth in Ersama block of Jagatsinghpur district. The proposed jetty will have a cargo handling capacity of 52 million metric tons and is expected to generate employment opportunities for approximately 3,450 people, both directly and indirectly.

At the concession agreement signing ceremony held at Lokseva Bhawan, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi stated that the state government aims to develop maritime commerce in Odisha through partnerships with various private companies. The government plans to establish two new ports at Inchudi and Bahuda, while also working on the development of Subarnarekha and Astaranga ports.

According to a release issued by Chief Minister’s Office, the Odisha government has signed a concession agreement with Gopalpur Ports Limited for the expansion and development of Gopalpur port. The project involves an investment of Rs 16,554 crore and aims to increase the port’s cargo handling capacity to 50 million metric tons. This development is expected to generate around 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities for youth.

The concession agreement was signed between JSW Utkal Steel Limited President Anil Kumar Singh, Gopalpur Ports Limited Business Head Sandeep Jaiswal, and Odisha Government’s Port Director Padmalochan Raul, in the presence of the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister emphasized the state’s focus on collaborative efforts to drive economic growth and development. This initiative is expected to enhance the state’s maritime infrastructure and facilitate increased trade and commerce activities.

The Chief Minister further stated that Gopalpur Port Limited (Adani Ports) and JSW Steel, both renowned globally for port development and steel production, will usher in a new era in port-led development in Odisha. These two projects are expected to create around 8,450 employment opportunities in the state.

Commerce and Transport Minister, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, emphasized the crucial role of port and jetty development in Odisha’s overall growth. He highlighted the government’s priority to identify potential locations along the state’s extensive coastline and develop non-major ports, jetties, fish harbours, coastal transportation, and infrastructure to boost economic development.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, Gokulananda Mallik, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary of Industries Department Shri Hemant Sharma, and officials from JSW Utkal Steel and Gopalpur Ports Limited.

Commerce and Transport Department’s Principal Secretary Usha Padhi welcomed everyone, while Additional Secretary Bidhan Ray proposed the vote of thanks.
