Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards empowering girls from economically disadvantaged families and promoting higher education, the Odisha Government today announced the launch of the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana as part of the State Budget for 2026-27 presented in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, while tabling the budget, highlighted the scheme as a key initiative under the government’s women empowerment agenda. “One of our government’s goals under women empowerment is to ensure that every girl completes her education up to the undergraduate level.
For this purpose, I propose to launch a new scheme named ‘Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana’,” Majhi stated while presenting the budget in the Assembly. Under the ambitious scheme, a savings instrument worth Rs 20,000 will be created in the name of eligible girls born into economically weaker sections.
This fund is intended to support their education journey from an early stage. Upon successfully completing their graduation (undergraduate degree), beneficiaries will receive a substantial financial assistance of Rs 1,01,000.
This lump-sum amount aims to provide long-term financial security, encourage self-reliance, and help girls pursue higher studies or career opportunities without economic barriers. The scheme is designed to address dropout rates among girls due to financial constraints and to foster gender equality in education. It targets underprivileged families to ensure that economic status does not hinder a girl’s academic aspirations.
In tandem with this, the budget allocates a massive Rs 10,145 crore for the ongoing Subhadra Yojana, which is expected to benefit over one crore women across the state. This flagship program continues to strengthen financial independence and empowerment for women through direct support.
The twin focus on girls’ education and women’s welfare underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive development. Officials noted that detailed guidelines, eligibility criteria, and implementation mechanisms for the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana will be issued soon.
