Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has launched toll-free telephone numbers for lodging complaints pertaining to potable water supply problems for both rural and urban areas during the summer season, informed Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Pratap Jena.
Briefing reporters after a review of the situation in areas facing drinking crisis in the State due to the summer season, Jena said that a toll-free number 1916 has been launched for lodging complaints pertaining to drinking water supply in rural areas and added that for urban areas the toll-free numbers are 155359 and 180034567843.
Jena informed that in rural areas where tube wells have become defunct and are beyond repair new tube wells will be sunk.
“Even in hamlets where the population is more than 70 persons and there is no tube well, we will sink new tube wells so that people do not face drinking water problem,” said Jena.
He said that the government is taking steps to ensure the availability of drinking water in all households in rural areas across the State through mega and single drinking water projects.
“We are taking steps to sink tube wells and sink new tube wells against defunct tube wells,” he added.
The Minister said that in addition to the above, teams have been formed at block level with mobile vans to attend to complaints immediately. These teams will repair and restore drinking water supply, he added.
He said in big blocks two such teams have been formed for repair and restoration of drinking water supply.
Jena said that it has come to his department’s notice that Solar Dual Pumps are lying defunct in certain areas due to lack of repair.
“We have directed OREDA to repair those pumps within 15 days,” he added.
The Minister stated that officials in charge of the drinking water supply have been directed not to leave their headquarters without permission.
