Nabarangpur: Tension prevailed in Badapanjuriguda village on Sunday after hundreds of irate residents ransacked property at Kodinga police station after the alleged death of one Gobardhan Bindhani, who was picked up by police on Friday.
As per reports, Gobardhan was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in gambling. Few hours later, he was admitted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) as his condition deteriorated. Since then, Gobardhan has gone missing, alleged the villagers.
Suspecting that he has died of police excess and cops are trying to keep the matter under wraps, locals staged road blockade near the police station by burning tyres. Gobardhan’s family members also scaled the boundary wall of the police station and vandalised the property.
On intimation, Nabarangpur’s Superintendant of Police reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC was clamped at the spot to avoid further untoward incident.
Additional SP Shantanu Mohanty said, “In the police station, Gobardhan said that was not feeling well. We took him to a local hospital but he was shifted to the DHH. In the DHH, his condition worsened so he was referred to Vishakhapatnam. Over there, he was declared dead. His wife and daughter had accompanied him.”
Meanwhile, locals have demanded that Gobardhan’s body should be immediately handed over to them and compensation should be provided to the kin of deceased. Further probe into the matter is currently underway.
