Berhampur: There was visible unrest in Kolidaspur village as locals staged a demonstration in front of Hinjili police station of Ganjam district. The police had taken into custody six people for interrogation and the locals were protesting against the same.

The six individuals are being interrogated on charges of torching vehicles involved in illegal sand mining from Rushikulya river bed.

The agitated villagers, reportedly, pelted stones at the police force deployed there. The police then had to resort to mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and maintain order in the area.

Aska SDPO and Hinjili IIC were unavailable for comment.

Late on Friday, peeved over the indifference of the administration towards their complaints against rampant illegal sand mining in the area, locals allegedly torched a tractor, a tipper, a motorcycle and an excavator belonging to the sand mining mafia.

According to reports, illegal sand mining has been rampant from Rushikulya river bed at Kolidaspur, Aalpur and Sikiri area in the last couple of days by the mafia. Villagers had repeatedly reported about the illegal sand mining to the administration seeking action as they believed that excessive sand mining would damage the river bed.
