Bhubaneswar: A total of 233 elephants and 3 tigers have died in Odisha during the period between 2017 to 2022.
In a written reply to a query by BJD MLA Prafulla Samal, Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Pradip Amat informed in the Odisha Assembly that during the period between 2017 to 2022, a total of 14 elephants have been killed by poachers, 63 have died of electrocution, 20 in rail accidents, 4 in road mishaps, 85 in other natural accidents and the cause of death of 47 elephants is not clear.
Amat has also informed that during the aforementioned period 2 tigers have been killed by poachers while another died due to other natural accidents.
The Minister stated that there were 1976 elephants in the State in 2017 and as per the last estimate published by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in 2018 there were 28 tigers in the State.
