Jagatsinghpur: ‘With great power comes great responsibilities’ and Tirtol BJD MLA Dr Rajashree Mallick has stood true to the words. While many in power demand for special attention and privileges while travelling in flight, Mallick has led by setting an example for generations to come.

On Tuesday, the legislator was flying in an Air India flight from Bhubaneswer to national capital New Delhi to attend an event. After take-off, a diabetic man named Kumud Mohanty of Jagatsinghpur, seated right in front of Mallick, fell unconscious with food inside his mouth. As his wife cried for help, Mallick immediately came to her rescue.

Little known fact is that Mallick was an associate professor in pathology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, before joining politics. Using her medical skills, she first opened Kumud’s mouth with bare hands and removed the food particles.

Then with the air hostess’ help, she gave him a cardiac massage to prevent any choke in the respiratory tract. Minutes later, Kumud regained his senses and any danger to his life was successfully averted.

When asked about her daring feat, she said to OMMCOM NEWS, “If I was in a hospital then the necessary equipments and other doctors would have helped me. But in this case, I was all alone and that too in mid-air. However, I did not get nervous at all. I knew that I just had to do my duty and face the challenge. I did not plan my steps and I simply did whatever I could to save the man’s life.”

Reportedly, as the couple expressed gratitude to the legislator, they were pleasantly surprised to know that Dr Mallick is Tirtol MLA. After landing, she immediately requested the family members to take Kumud to a hospital for check-up and the smile on their faces was enough of a reward for her.
