Sambalpur: A court in Odisha’s Kuchinda on Wednesday sentenced a man to death and his son to life imprisonment for the gruesome murder of three members of a family in 2020.
Additional District Judge, Kuchinda, Rajkishore Lenka convicted the main accused Nabin Dehury (50) under relevant sections of the IPC and sentenced him to death.
The court also convicted Nabin Dehury’s son Hemananda Dehury alias Mantu (22), a co-accused in the case under relevant sections of IPC and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The court further imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on each of them.
The court pronounced the sentence on the based on the depositions of 20 witnesses of Lapada village.
As per the case details, the incident took place on 21st October in 2020 at around 2 PM.
One Giridhari Behera of Lapada village in Jarabaga panchayat under Bamra block of Sambalpur district had gone to his farmland to bring the paddy he had harvested.
Villagers had seen Nabin and his son Mantu going to the farmland with an axe. Nabin and Mantu hacked Giridhari to death with the axe and returned to the village leaving the body on the farmland.
While returning home they saw Giridhari’s wife Sabitri (35) and his mother Pirabati (55) were at the village tubewell to fetch water.
Nabin brutally attacked Sabitri and Pirabati with the axe leading to their instantaneous death.
As news spread, then Sambalpur SP Kanwar Vishal Singh, Kuchinda SDPO Rajkishore Mishra, Mahulpali IIC Jyotsnarani Behera, Sub Inspector Dilip Behera and team visited the crime spot and captured the father-son duo who hiding after committing the murders.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in the village leading to the heavy deployment of police force in the area.
The issue being very sensitive, the case was red-flagged.
