Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Maritime Board (OMB) is charting an ambitious course towards becoming a key driver of the State’s Blue Economy and maritime growth. Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport Department Usha Padhee, visited the newly established Odisha Maritime Board office and conducted a comprehensive review of its on-going and upcoming initiatives yesterday.
During the visit, Padhee reviewed the Board’s strategic plans to modernise and expand port infrastructure, enhance maritime connectivity, promote coastal shipping, and boost economic activities linked to Odisha’s 480 km long coastline. She emphasised the need for integrated development of port-led industries, sustainable shipping practices, and skill development in the maritime sector.
According to Padhee, “The Odisha Maritime Board is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the State’s maritime destiny — from driving investment in port infrastructure to creating jobs and enhancing trade competitiveness. We must align our efforts with national and global best practices to harness the full potential of our coastline.”
The review meeting also highlighted key focus areas such as the development of existing ports, facilitation for new port projects, and capacity expansion. Blue Economy Promotion — Encouraging marine tourism, fisheries, renewable energy projects, and coastal community lively sustainable Practices — Environment-friendly port operations, waste management systems, and climate resilience measures.
Ease of Doing Business — Streamlining clearances, attracting private sector investments, and adopting digital solutions for faster operations.
Padhee commended the OMB team for their proactive approach and urged them to adopt innovative financing models and global collaborations to strengthen Odisha’s position as a maritime hub in Eastern India.
The Odisha Maritime Board, formed to provide unified governance for the State’s port sector, is working on a roadmap that aligns with the Government of Odisha’s vision for inclusive and sustainable economic growth. With strategic planning, modern infrastructure, and policy reforms, OMB aims to transform Odisha from a shoreline state to a maritime powerhouse.
