Bhubaneswar: A 25-year-old first-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) student from Odisha, studying at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday in a suspected case of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Jadavendra Sahu, son of Upendra Sahu from Gondia block in Dhenkanal district, had taken admission into the MD (Gynaecology and Obstetrics) course in January this year. He was staying in Room No. 515 of Hostel No. 10 on the institute campus.
According to reports, Sahu failed to respond to phone calls or open his door on Saturday morning. His room was found locked from the inside. The hostel authorities, suspecting something was wrong, alerted the local police.
Police personnel broke open the door and found Sahu unconscious on the bed. He was rushed to the emergency ward, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Preliminary findings suggest that Sahu may have ended his life by injecting himself with a high dose of anaesthesia on Friday night.
Following the incident, Sahu’s mother and younger brother rushed to AIIMS-Patna. However, family members have alleged foul play, claiming that Sahu was murdered inside the hostel.
The police have initiated an investigation. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the postmortem report, police said.
