Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to witness a spell of active weather conditions starting April 16, as an upper air cyclonic circulation is set to trigger thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, hailstorms, and widespread rainfall across several districts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple warnings, advising the public and local authorities to remain alert.

According to the IMD’s midday weather bulletin, the cyclonic circulation currently extends from northeast Madhya Pradesh to south coastal Odisha and runs up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

It is expected to intensify the weather activity in the region, particularly affecting Odisha from April 16 to April 22.

On April 16, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur in the afternoon and evening hours at many places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Boudh, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
One or two places in Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, and Sonepur may also receive rainfall, while dry weather is likely to prevail in the rest of the districts.

An Orange Warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning, gusty surface wind speeds reaching 50–60 km/h, and hailstorm activity at a few places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Angul, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Koraput.

On April 17, the active weather is set to continue, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely at many places over coastal and interior districts, including Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. A Yellow Warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 km/h at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Balasore.

On April 18, rainfall is likely to be slightly more scattered, with a few places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar expected to receive showers. One or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati may also witness thunderstorms.

Thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) is also predicted in the afternoon/evening hours.

From April 19 to April 22, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places across Odisha, particularly during afternoon and evening hours, as the cyclonic circulation continues to influence the region.

The IMD has urged farmers, travelers, and local administrations to remain cautious, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when the weather is expected to be most intense.
