Odisha Paika Mutiny: Centre To Commemorate Bicentenary Of Valiant Uprising

**New Delhi/Bhubaneswar:** The Centre in its Budget-2017 announced to celebrate the 200 years completion of Paika Mutiny in Odisha against the then British Raj in India.

Known to be the first Freedom Struggle of India, the courageous uprising of soldiers was led by legendary Buxi Jagabandhu in Khordha district of Odisha against the British Raj in 1817.

Presenting the Annual Budget-2017 in Lok Sabha, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley stated, “200 years ago in 1817, a valiant uprising of soldiers led by Buxi Jagabandhu took place in Khordha. We will commemorate it appropriately.”
Besides, the Government of India will commemorate the centenary year of Champaran Satyagrah in Gujarat this year, the Union Finance Minister added.

Expressing his indebtedness to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, an Odia himself, said, “The decision to celebrate the 200 years completion of Paika Mutiny is a big appreciation of the Centre for Odias.”

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Congress leaders in the State here have also welcomed the Centre’s gesture.

Notably, the 1817 revolution against the British Raj was the first of its kind in the then colonial India. Spearheaded by Jagabandhu Bidyadhar Mohapatra Bhramarbar Rai, popular as Buxi Jagabandhu, in Khordha of Odisha as many as 400 Kandhas of Ghumusar marched towards Khordha protesting against the British and were joined by the Paikas, Daleis and Dalbeheras of Khordha later in March 1817.

Such a movement resulted in a temporary retreat by the Britishers and had a domino effect on the Indian Freedom Movement later in the country.

In his reactions, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, “On behalf of the people of Odisha, I welcome the decision of the Government of India to commemorate the bicentenary of ‘Paika Bidroha’ led by Buxi Jagabandhu.”

Former minister and senior BJP leader Biswa Bhusan Harichandan said, “Yesterday the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley while presenting the Union Budget gave the Central Government’s seal of approval of Paika Mutiny. It was the first ever freedom struggle in Odisha. It had been in the year 1817 in which the brave Odias irrespective of caste, creed and religion participated in the noble sacrifice and exemplary patriotism. We thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for the gesture shown towards Odisha’s historic and proudest movement.”
