Bhubaneswar: A concrete slab was suspended from the Rasulgarh flyover on National Highway 16 in a perilous manner today afternoon. On spotting the slab hanging dangerously, the locals informed the police.

The incident took place at around 4 pm during the peak hour. The vehicular movement on this stretch was considerably high during the period. The occurrence spread panic among commuters, refreshing memories of similar incidents in Bhubaneswar, one among which was fatal.

A team of NHAI officials and local police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area diverting the traffic for some time. The NHAI personnel ascended to the 'spot' and have started repair work.

People in the area complained that such incidents have occurred multiple times and the bridge requires maintenance. In August, 2019, a portion of the Hanspal over bridge sunk, exposing defects in the construction. In yet another incident in the past, concrete from the Rasulgarh fly-over fell on the service road.

"The authorities are saying it is a portion of the false set which was not removed. However, the same piece of false set could prove fatal if it fell on the head of a motorcycle rider. This matter cannot be taken callously," a local shopkeeper said.
