**Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: ** The first ever graduate and legal luminary of Odisha, Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das, was commemorated by various social organisations on his birth anniversary on Friday.
People visited Madhusudan Sangrahalaya on the premises of Saila Bala Women’s College in Cuttack City that runs from a small hall on the ground floor of Madhusmruti (currently the premier women’s college), which was once the home of Madhusudan Das.
Apart from that, various social organisations offered tributes to Madhu Babu at his Samadhi at Gorakabar in the millennium city of Cuttack, his statue at Cantonment Road and at his workplace at Madhusmruti at Mission Road in Cuttack city where he stayed from 1889 till his death in February 1934.
Known as the architect of modern Odisha, he was one of the foremost modern thinkers of our country. He played a major role in the formation of the separate Odisha state and the freedom of expression, education, rural development and labour reforms.
He founded Utkal Sammilani which brought a revolution in the social and industrial development of Odisha.
By his long political fight, he united Odisha and modern Odisha took birth on 1 April 1936.
This day is celebrated as Utkala Dibasa.
Apart from being a lawyer, political reformer, social worker, he was also a litterateur and had penned a number of articles and poems in both English and Odia.
Some of his important poems are “Utkal Santan”, “Jati Itihash” and “Jananira Ukti” .
