Odisha PCC Chief Concedes Defeat Before Result

Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the trends and projections made by the exit polls since last Sunday (final polling day in India), Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Niranjan Patnaik today in his media reactions admitted defeat in the State here before the exact outcome tomorrow (general poll results day).

In his media reactions on the eve of the counting day, the PCC president said, “We are never optimistic of forming government in the State. How does the question arise on pronouncing boldly that we are going to form the government in the State here? We have been clearly telling across the State that we can’t form the government.”

When further prodded by the media on the possibility of government formation in Odisha, the PCC chief commented, “Whatever we had hoped, there is now least chance. BJP is being projected by the exit polls winning more seats than us (Congress).”

“How can we be the main opposition party here in Odisha? If they (BJD and BJP) join hands, we’ll obviously be the main opposition party,” he quipped.

On the other hand, senior Congress leader Sarat Rout reacted, “Despite the scope and electoral prospects we had in Odisha for the results in our favour, the outcome Congress wished couldn’t be achieved even though we can retain the status quo of last election.”

Listing out the reasons behind the un-success, the senior Congressman said, “Lacuna lied in distribution of tickets, election management, lack of zeal, etc. We fought the election like orphans. Nobody enquired about our positions in our respective seats. No support was lent by the party.”

“Niranjan Babu disappointed the party, candidates and also betrayed Rahul Gandhi. Due to this, all candidates suffered helplessness,” he alleged.

On being queried, if Niranjan Patnaik has conspired, pat came the reply of Rout, “Whether Niranjan Babu has conspired or not, he can better reply to this question. Notwithstanding that, we are still going to bag not less than 20-30 seats in Odisha.”
