Odisha: Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy Arrested, Court-Forwarded For Attacking EC Officials

Puri: Soon after the news of Pipili MLA and BJD candidate Pradeep Maharathy attacking Election Commission officials spread like wildfire, cops began a probe into the incident immediately and arrested the legislator in the afternoon.

As per reports, Maharathy was called to Pipili police station for interrogation into the incident following which the arrest was made. Puri SP Uma Shankar Dash informed that a case has been lodged against Maharathy under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 341, 353, 332, 147, 148, 149, 171 (b), 186 and 123.

“He has been court-forwarded. The arrest has been made after sufficient amount of proof. There are 15-20 more persons involved in this case. They will also be arrested soon,” informed the SP. Maharathy has been forwarded to Court of Judicial Magistrate of First Class, Pipili, stated reports.

A team of Election Commission (EC) officials, including a magistrate, were allegedly attacked last night while conducting a raid in Maharathy’s farmhouse. Along with his supporters, Maharathy allegedly attacked a flying squad team led by executive magistrate Rabi Narayan Patra. The injured have been admitted to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

“After getting information about the distribution of money and liquor at Pradeep Maharathy’s farmhouse, I, along with the Static Surveillance Team (SST) team, had gone for investigation. As soon as the team reached there, Maharathy started hurling abuses and later attacked me and my team,” alleged Patra.

“On the basis of the statement by the injured flying squad team members, police have registered a case. Statements of the victims have been recorded and the investigation is underway,” Puri Collector Jyotiprakash Das had said on Monday.
