Odisha Police Arrests Accused In Connection With ‘Serial Rapes & Murders’

**Puri:** A special team of Puri police which was formed to probe into the Delanga rape and murder case nabbed the main accused from Deogarh on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as Buddhadeb Behera of Bhinnahaja village under Kundeigola PS of Deogarh district, and it is found that he was involved in similar rape and murder of four different girls.

According to Central Range IG Soumendra Priyadarshi, “Behera, the accused is a labour contractor who was a mentally retarded sexual predator. His modus operandi was very simple. He used to befriend young girls on the pretext of providing them work and later rape them by drugging them. Later, to avoid getting caught, he used to murder them. We have found out five such cases.”

In a press meet, he further informed that Behera is a married man and a case was registered against him in 2010 for allegedly torturing his wife for dowry. In 2012, he committed his first rape and murder in Deogarh. He had even managed to escape from lockup after he was arrested for the crime. On 26th August, 2016, he did it Bairi village, on 14 July 2017 in Chilakpur Andhra Pradesh, and then in Delang. Further he informed about the Nuagaon area in the border of Jharkhand and Odisha border.

Notably, on August 1, the police had seized a women’s dead body and had recovered an ID card and ATM card near it. The woman was identified as Anita Naik, whom he had murdered after raping by drugging her in cold drink. This serial killer was caught due to the investigation of this case.

“He is a psychopathic killer and a habitual offender. We will try our best to see that he is justly punished for his crimes,” informed the IG.
