Bhubaneswar: Two senior Maoist cadre were gunned down in an exchange of fire that occurred in a dense forest in Malkangiri on the intervening night of December 12 and 13. Arms, ammunition and other materials were seized from the spot, during the search operation carried out in the area today morning.
Briefing media persons on the encounter, DG Police Abhay said, “There was an exchange of fire which lasted for about an hour, and the SOG’s superior training, firepower and bravery, the Maoists retreated from the area. Today on the wee hours of the day, an intensive search was carried out in the region during which two bodies, a man and a woman, were spotted.”
One of the deceased (male) was an Area Committee Member while the identity of the woman is yet to be ascertained, said Abhay. “We believe, that the woman was also an important cadre, going by her uniform.” One INSAS rifle, an SLR rifle, 20 rounds of ammunition, Maoist kits and other incriminating articles were seized from the spot.
The operation took place in a forest in Singaram Village of Kudumulugumma Tehsil in Malkangiri district. A team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) was carrying out an area domination exercise in the area, late night on Saturday. During the operation, they confronted armed Maoists in the forest who opened fire at the forces.
“Due to the increased presence of security forces in Swabhiman Anchal (erstwhile cut-off area on Odisha-Andhra border), the Maoists are retreating. I would inform the people of Odisha and Swabhiman Anchal, that there is adequate presence of the Border Security Force in the region. We are determined to free the Swabhiman Anchal from Maoists,” the DGP said.
