Bhubaneswar: Setting a milestone, the Odisha Police seized over 1,000 quintals of ganja or cannabis till September. In collaboration with the excise department and other agencies, the State Police hopes to check the rampant drug trade.
In the last nine months, cumulatively 1054 quintals of cannabis were seized making it the record seizure of any year by the Odisha Police. Notably, average seizure of the past ten years is 312 quintals whereas the average seizure of the last five years is 414 quintals.
Coming to the seizures made in the time period of January-September 2020, the following three districts had maximum seizures:
- Koraput – 413.14 quintals
- Malkangiri – 240.66 quintals
- Gajapati – 126.58 quintals
Briefing the media, DGP Abhay said that action against drug trafficking remains amongst the highest priorities of Odisha Government. Going into an overdrive, Odisha Police accelerated concerted drive against ganja and brown-sugar since the beginning of the year 2020.
Showing appreciation for the hard work, DGP has written a special appreciation letter to each of the district SPs.
