Odisha Polls 2019: BJD MLA Prabhat Biswal Opts Not To Contest
**Cuttack: ** Choudwar-Cuttack MLA (BJD) Prabhat Biswal has decided not to contest the ensuing Assembly polls.
Having written a formal letter to BJD supremo and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, sitting MLA Biswal has cited that he prefers to be away from electoral politics till the final verdict of the court on his alleged involvement in the multi-crore chit fund scam.
He has, however, made it clear that he is with BJD and work for the party sincerely.
In his media reactions, the sitting legislator said, “As a case is sub judice in my name, I’m not going to contest election this time. It is for the sake of my dear leader and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s dignity and honour. This decision is also not to damage my party BJD’s image and pride.”
He also stated, “I’ve taken this decision as a disciplined worker of my party. I have complied whatever responsibilities were entrusted to me in the past and now also prepared to comply whatever responsibilities would be entrusted.”
“Our party is now stressing on winnability. Whatever survey would have revealed on the political scenario of Choudwar-Cuttack assembly constituency, party would have certainly selected an eligible candidate accordingly,” the sitting MLA opined.
On the other hand, the day also witnessed tug of war between Biswal’s supporters and opponents.
In his reactions, Choudwar Biju Chhatra Janata Dal president said, “MLA Prabhat Biswal has already been in the heads and hearts of all the people of Choudwar-Cuttack assembly constituency. Whatever decision the Chief Minister will take, it will be welcomed by MLA Prabhat Biswal and us. But the way he has sacrificed for the party, BJD would have had some good message.”
“There is only one person to take decision and he is Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. If his son is given ticket, the people of Choudwar-Cuttack will welcome the decision,” he stated.
On the contrary, Birendra Singh from Choudwar-Cuttack assembly constituency said, “Prabhat Biswal shouldn’t be given ticket. If he has decided not to contest, his son should also be not given party ticket. Not even to his wife and family members or kin.”
“Since he has betrayed us once, we can’t trust him second time. Ajay Barik is loved by us. He has done a lot for lots of people. Today it is time to give him ticket,” he demanded.
The Choudwar-Cuttack MLA also alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been misused to defame him as well as his party Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Notably, Biswal was arrested by CBI last year for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore chit fund scam and alleged complicity with tainted firm Seashore.
Biswal’s decision comes close on the heels of his party colleague and Banki counterpart Prabhat Tripathy. Tripathy has also opted for being out of fray this time and has recommended his son’s candidature instead from Banki Assembly constituency. It is said that Biswal has also recommended his son’s candidature.
Prior to Biswal, Tripathy was also arrested by CBI the previous year for his alleged involvement in the same multi-crore chit fund scam and alleged complicity with tainted firm Artha Tatwa.
