Odisha Polls: Patkura Assembly Constituency Election On July 20

Bhubaneswar: The date of election to the much-awaited Patkura Assembly Constituency was announced today by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The date of poll has been scheduled on July 20, 2019 while the counting of votes will be on July 24, 2019.

As per the notification of the Election Commission of India (ECI) published in its official website, “Now, the Commission after taking into consideration various factors like, festivals, electoral rolls, etc., the Commission has decided to hold the adjourned poll to fill this vacancy as per the programme mentioned as under: –

Counting of Votes

24-07-2019 (Wednesday)

The ECI official website also mentions, “In view of “FANI” cyclone, the CEO Odisha proposed to postpone the schedule of elections mentioned above with date of poll on 19.05.2019. Accordingly, the Commission decided to extend the completion of the election from 96-Patkura AC for 60 days.”

Notably, election to this only seat under the Kendrapara Parliamentary Constituency could not be held along with the recently concluded general elections following the sudden death of BJD candidate late Bed Prakash Agarwalla.

Now BJD has fielded late Bed Prakash wife Sabitri while her major contender his senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra in the fray. She has already filed her nomination before the previously re-scheduled date of poll on 19.05.2019 and has also been declared valid as a contestant. 

In his media reactions, ruling BJD general secretary Sanjay Das Burma said, “Our party fully prepared for the Patkura election. The requisite organizational activities are already underway for the purpose.”
