Bhubaneswar: Thousands of primary teachers from over 56,000 schools in Odisha will go on an indefinite strike from Monday. These teachers are agitating for the fulfillment of their four-point charter of demands under the banner of the United Primary Teachers Federation.
Their demands include a contractual appointment system, salary as per the central norm, and reimplementation of the old pension system among others.
The agitating teachers will stage dharnas in front of 314 block education offices and submit memoranda to the district education officers (DEO) today. They are scheduled to hold a press conference to apprise the media about their demands and agitation schedule on Sunday.
Earlier, the federation members had staged dharnas at various places in the state, including the Lower PMG in the state capital to press for their demands.
On September 5, the government held an inter-ministerial meeting to discuss the teachers’ demands but the meeting failed to find a solution. However, the state government had assured that the demands of the teachers would be considered, said Gadadhar Nayak, Mayurbhanj district general secretary of the United Primary Teachers Federation.
